Direct questions, answered directly
Eight questions account for most of what clients ask before a review begins. Each is answered on its own page: the short version first, then the reasoning.
These pages are written the way the guides are: the answer first, the limits stated beside it, and no figures or promises anywhere. Where a question needs more room than a page allows, the answer links to the guide that gives it. If your question is not here, it is a reasonable thing to bring to the contact page — unanswered questions are how this section grows.
Can a PE seal plans drawn by someone else?
Yes — under conditions. The engineer must review the work thoroughly enough to take responsible charge of it. Here is where the line sits.
What does a PE need before reviewing plans?
The current drawings, the calculations behind them, the project location, and anything the jurisdiction has already said. The full intake list.
What happens when plans need corrections?
Written comments, a revision, an item-by-item response, and a re-examination. What the cycle looks like from the client's side of the desk.
Does a PE seal guarantee a permit?
No. The permitting decision belongs to the authority having jurisdiction. What the seal does — and does not — contribute to that decision.
What is responsible charge?
The legal idea inside every seal: the engineer's direct control over, or thoroughly reviewed knowledge of, the work being sealed.
Does the PE need to be licensed in my state?
In the project's jurisdiction, yes — licensure is state by state, and the sealing engineer's license must match where the project is built.
What is the difference between review and sealing?
Review is the examination; sealing is the attestation that follows it. One can be commissioned without the other — with different results.
How do I start a PE review?
With the project location, the discipline, the current documents, and any comment letter you hold. The sequence, step by step.
Your question isn't listed?
Bring it with the project. A good scoping conversation answers questions in the order the engagement will meet them.
