How do I start a PE review?
With an inquiry that contains four things. Everything after that is the engagement's own machinery, which the process guide describes stage by stage.
Send the project location, the disciplines involved, the current document set, and any authority comments you hold. The reviewer confirms jurisdiction and licensure, then issues a written scope and quote — fee and expected timeline stated in it — before review work begins.
The first message, composed well
A strong opening inquiry is short because its contents do the work. Where the project is — the jurisdiction check comes first, and location decides it. What the project is — building type, scope, the disciplines you believe are involved (uncertainty is a legitimate answer; scoping resolves it). What exists — the drawings and calculations, their revision state, and whether an authority has already commented. What is driving the timeline — a permit deadline, a closing, a fabrication slot. Four paragraphs at most. An inquiry like this can be scoped in one exchange; an inquiry missing its documents starts a correspondence instead.
What happens next
The sequence from there is the six-stage process this library documents: jurisdiction and eligibility confirmation; a written scope and quote describing the work, the fee, and the expected timeline for the engagement; document intake and a completeness check; the review itself; corrections if the work needs them; and sealing when the responsible engineer is satisfied. Nothing in that sequence should surprise you if you have read the guides — which is rather the point of publishing them.
What not to do first
Do not start by collecting turnaround promises from websites, and do not send documents to anyone who quotes before seeing them. The first filter for a reviewer is procedural: do they ask where the project is, do they want the calculations with the drawings, do they put the scope in writing? A reviewer whose intake is careful will run the rest of the engagement the same way. The answer on what a PE needs before reviewing plans is the checklist to hold your inquiry against.
Ready when you are
Project reviews are coordinated through the contact page — which repeats this checklist beside the form.
