Can I just buy a PE stamp online?

No — and the reason is the whole point of the seal. A stamp is a licensed engineer's legal attestation that the work was reviewed under their responsible charge. It follows a review; it is never a product on a shelf.

The short answer

No. A professional engineer's seal is not merchandise — it is a legal attestation, applied to documents, that the work was prepared or genuinely reviewed under that engineer's responsible charge. A seal can only follow a real review by an engineer licensed in the project's jurisdiction. Anyone selling the stamp itself, without the review, is selling the one thing the licensing rules exist to prevent.

Why a seal can't be a product

A product works the same way no matter who buys it. A seal is the opposite: it is one named engineer's personal, licensed statement — I stand behind this work — and it is only true if that engineer actually engaged with the work. The moment a seal is detached from a review and sold by itself, the statement becomes false, and every document carrying it inherits the problem. That is why the rules treat the transaction itself as the violation, for the engineer who sells it and as a practical risk for the client who buys it.

What the licensing rules require

Every state's engineering board works from the same structure. The sealing engineer must hold a license in the jurisdiction where the project will be built. The engineer must work under responsible charge — direct control over the work, or a review thorough enough to take genuine professional responsibility for it. And the review must come before the seal: documents are examined, corrections are required where the work falls short, and only the corrected, satisfactory set is sealed. Firm registration rules sit alongside the individual license in many jurisdictions. None of these steps is paperwork decoration; together they are what the seal certifies.

What a for-sale stamp really is

The offers are easy to find: upload your drawings, pay a fee, receive stamped plans back — fast, cheap, and with no engineer asking questions. What is actually being sold is the appearance of compliance. No licensed review stands behind the documents, which means the risk lands on the project: an authority that discovers an unsupported seal can reject the set and the permit with it; a design failure in rubber-stamped documents has no responsible engineer behind it; and the engineer whose seal was rented faces board discipline that can end the license entirely. The same profession that lawfully seals plans drawn by someone else every day draws the line exactly here — the review is real, or the seal is not.

The lawful way to get plans sealed online

None of this means geography. A genuine review engagement runs online end to end: you send the plan set, the calculations, and the project location; the desk confirms the sealing engineer is licensed in that jurisdiction; you receive a written scope and quote before any work begins; the engineer reviews, issues corrections where the work needs them, and seals when the standard is met. The difference from the for-sale offer is not the website — it is that an accountable engineer actually did the work the seal describes. That is slower than a checkout button and considerably more useful at a permit counter.

Have plans that need a real seal?

Send the set to the desk. Jurisdiction check and a written scope and quote come first — the review, and then the seal, follow from there.
